Costa Rica Trip Reflection From A Teacher

Costa Rica Trip Reflection From A Teacher Chaperone

April 11, 2019, three senior students from Global Experience Magnet School set off on an excursion to Costa Rica.  The trip was the culmination of almost a year worth of capstone research and they made the most of every opportunity to expand on their prior learning.  Leading up to the experience, each students researched problems in the country of Costa Rica, and selected one major issue to do in depth research on.

The 7 day trip included visits to San Jose, Sarchi, Monteverde, Arenal, and Sarapiqui.  The students hit the ground running.  They toured a Fair Trade coffee plantation, got the opportunity to plant a tree in a reforestation project, participated in activities on a local farm, and visited EARTH University where they learned about efforts to bring sustainable agriculture to impoverished parts of the world.  Other highlights included several hikes through the rainforest to see the incredible diversity of Costa Rica, playing soccer and dancing with locals, and a memorable night sleeping in tent cabins among very vocal howler monkeys.

The students embraced every opportunity to expand upon their already impressive knowledge of Costa Rica through interviews and conversations with locals, but they also got to mingle with students from Chicago and Montreal and learn from them as well.  These GEMS students showed the curiosity, cultural sensitivity and openness that one would expect from those who identify as global citizens.

Pura Vida!
